The Tennessee writing rubrics are designed to score the student responses from the writing portion of the TNReady assessment. Each rubric is aligned to the appropriate grade-level standards in the Writing and Language strands. History are designed to score the student responses from the writing portion of the TNReady assessment.
Having separate rubrics for different ranges of grade levels communicates that there are real, qualitative differences in expectations for each.
Feedback indicated that there was a perceived overlap or repetition of ideas between Focus and Controlling Idea, and between Reading/Research and Development.
In addition to making the rubrics “lighter” and more aligned with teachers’ expectations, these new rubrics have more grade-level precision as well as much more flexibility to help teachers assess content understandings specific to each academic discipline.
LDC Modules 675 June 24, 2015 New and improved LDC Rubrics for scoring student work will soon be finalized and released for the 2015–2016 school year.
Included on the grid are two commentaries for each exemplar paper, one based on the Official Writing Scoring Guide, and one based on the Legacy Scoring Guide.
Note that while the commentary differs slightly depending on which version of the scoring guide is used, the scores remain the same. These exemplar papers show student work at various achievement levels. From relatively low papers to those that are high and exceed the standard.Starting with the 2017-2018 school year, the “Revised Writing Scoring Guide” becomes the Official version, which is currently posted.Copies of the updated Official Writing Scoring Guide for both Narrative and Informative/Explanatory writing guides be found on the Scoring Guides page.In addition to updated rubrics, we will be introducing a variety of options for “Content Understanding” that can be dropped into the rubric depending on the discipline and the disciplinary-specific cognitive demands related to the content of the specific teaching task. For example, the options for science come from the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). To simplify the scoring process and reduce confusion, the four dimensions listed have been collapsed into two: Controlling Idea and Development/Use of Sources.Ideas from Focus and Reading/Research are retained within new dimensions.Though the rubrics are not explicitly designed to be used as instructional resources, the department provides the writing rubrics in advance so that educators can prepare students for the writing portion of the TNReady assessment. It was crafted in 2014 and has two strands: content and literacy. The content strand is focused on a student’s knowledge of prompt specific U. History, while the literacy strand focuses on ensuring that ELA skills are also present in a student response.
