The assignments process for graduate and upper-class undergraduate students is broken up into various rounds.
Because students leave and enter housing throughout the year, there are multiple assignment rounds for each quarter.
Please review the Moving-in section for all moving-related information, including checking in, what to bring, a move-in checklist, and mail delivery.
This section will answer many of your pre-arrival questions about your residence, the best way to get to Stanford, where to stay if you want to arrive before your move-in date, and more.
The Draw/ Lottery: The first round of assignments, called The Draw (for undergraduate housing) and Lottery (for graduate housing), takes place in the spring preceding Autumn Quarter.
In this round, students are randomly assigned application numbers and assigned spaces in housing based on these application numbers and the choices they list on their applications. For information on cancelling an assignment see Cancelling Your Housing. For reassignment information, visit the Reassignment section.Everything you need to know about this process is available in Assignments and Contracts.Incoming freshmen and transfer students follow a different assignment process and should visit the Freshmen and Transfer webpage for more information. The general opening dates of graduate residences for each quarter are listed on the housing calendar. There are multiple move-in dates available to single graduate students, couples without children and students with children for the autumn.NOTE: If you are unable to pick up your key by the second business day after your contract begins, you must notify your Housing Front Desk in writing of your intent to arrive late including the date and time of your planned arrival.Housing assignments will only be held for late arrival until Wednesday of the first week of the academic term for which your contract begins. However, you may be able to move in early if you need to attend orientation programs, take qualifying or placement exams, or take special classes before the general opening of the residences. For the most up-to-date move dates and information, please reference the R&DE Calendar.
