By studying great endings, you can also improve the way you close a paragraph, a section, or a piece of writing and create an outsized impact for your most engaged readers. Following up on my Great Beginnings piece, I picked out the endings from 94 of the most compelling feature articles from the Op-Ed section, and an additional 6 articles by Malcolm Gladwell for a nice round 100.See the appendix below for details on the articles chosen. In fact, to stop myself going completely thesis crazy – I had pretty much every weekend away from my work laptop.
Having recently come out the other end myself and submitted my Ph D thesis, I thought I would share some of the best and worst bits about writing a thesis full time. I did venture into the office a few times for a change of scenery and a boost in productivity but there would be so many interruptions and people wanting to say hello that I didn’t really get much done until after 6pm when most people had headed off home.
But it is safe to say that I am glad I don’t live on my own so I had some company in the evenings. ♥ The overwhelming feelings of panic, stress, anxiety, guilt and doubt!
How does new media alter the environment and possibilities for creative writing?
Each academic year kicks off with the Fall Convergence, a gathering of nationally and internationally renowned writers and artists to engage topics in contemporary poetics.
During these few months – – you are always thinking about your thesis in one way or another.
Whether it is a feeling that you are not going to get it done in time, worrying about it not being good enough, stress from your supervisor asking you to reanalyse a whole chapters worth of data that you did in the first year of your Ph D – – or you actually took some time for yourself and felt guilty that you weren’t writing your thesis – it is always there in the back of your mind. The MFA poses the central questions of poetics, inquiring into the social, cultural, and technological aspects of writing to ask: How is creative writing an ethical, political and aesthetic endeavor? What forms might creative writing take in an interconnected, transnational society? It can get so frustrating though making all those little adjustments and combining that with the glitches of a dying computer – I just wanted to throw my laptop at a wall by the end of it! And I haven’t even mentioned the blogging and article writing I had more time to do and get excited about too! All the blood, sweat and tears, the pushing and shoving all to reach this end point. You’ll be glad to know I resisted as that might have made writing and printing my work a little harder! Once you have completed it and you are printing like you have never printed before – – and finished working on what is most likely to be the biggest and most important single piece of work you will ever do, take time to step back, reflect and be damn proud of yourself! Of course, this is completely person dependent as everyone works in different ways and enjoys different things, but I just wanted to highlight that if you are dreading the write up stage of your Ph D, Masters degree or even your undergrad dissertation, it isn’t all bad. All I would say is embrace the experience and learn from it! These are some of the things I experienced whilst writing my Ph D thesis, but I want to hear your experiences too.The writing up stage of a Ph D is both incredibly exciting but also a completely terrifying point of the Ph D journey. It’s always best to finish on a positive note in my eyes so let’s get stuck into what I found were the worst bits: . Don’t get me wrong – I love my own company and I was very glad to get out of the noisy office so I could concentrate on writing and getting this monster written. Some people dread it and some can’t wait to reach that stage. But after two months of my three months of thesis writing, I did start to go a little bit stir crazy not talking to anyone for most of the day every day.Two elements that affect your read ratio (how many people read to the end) are length and popularity: My Medium stats tell me that 89% of readers never got to the end—which makes sense. It’s a 25-minute read, and it reached tens of thousands of people, not all of whom were super dedicated to the art of great writing (good news for you, dear reader, if you are! And this is a pattern that holds true for my other pieces: only 3 of the 22 pieces I’ve written in the last three years on Medium have gotten more than a 50% read ratio, and they were all short (requiring less than four minutes of reading time) and were read by a more targeted audience (fewer than 3,000 views). But here’s a piece of advice for free: Your thesis or dissertation is never going to be perfect. There will always be more you could have done or want to do. Another down side to not being down the corridor from my supervisor.
